Firstly I would like to say sorry to all the good breast swimmers out there, this post is not about you. This is about the people that aren't that good at swimming and that clearly overestimates their ability.
Secondly I would like to point out that I know that there is a very easy way to avoid this issue on my part. I could just join a swimming club and it would all be a lot better, but right now I enjoy going to the swimming pool together with my girlfriend and that's that.
The local swimming pool is filled up with swimmers almost all the time. They normally divide the pool into three parts. One big part for slow swimmers, one big part for kids to play and one lane for fast swimmers. This in itself is okey, as the main customers at this swimming pools are slow swimmers during public hours. My problem is how the fast lane is marked. On the sign next to it, it says "for crawls swimmers and long distance breast swimmers." This invites bad breast swimmers to join in on the fast lane even though they really don't fit in there. And here are the reasons why.
They are not fast: Most breast swimmers swim slower than crawl swimmers, and should therefore not be in the fast lane. Those who can keep up are welcome to join. End of story. Next!
They use up a lot of space: I have to pass people all the time in public pools. Passing crawl swimmers isn't a problem as they usually take less than 1/3 of the lane. This makes it possible to pass people, even when there are other crawl swimmers passing the other way.
Breast swimmers use sometimes over half the lane with their kicks, which makes it incredibly difficult to overtake when there are many people in the same lane. This results in people swimming in a line behind the slowest swimmer until the lane is open from oncoming traffic.
Bigger chance of getting kicked: Not only do their kicks go out to the side, but bad breast swimmers also tend to stop a little bit before they kick. This makes their speed incredibly hard to calculate and the danger of getting kicked in the face increase significantly when swimming behind them.
It is important to me that you understand that I do not wish to ban breast swimmers, but I would simply like it better if public pools didn't push all of the mediocre ones in with the crawl swimmers. That just isn't fun for any of us.
