I’m scared! This road will be everything but nice, my journey ahead will be long and strenuous. I will challenge myself more than I have ever done before in my life and it will definitely change me as a person. That’s the way my mind has thought about my coming adventure. It is such an immense and unfathomably long way to go, and I have committed. I have paid the bill, pressed a huge enter button that I bought just for the occasion (in a silly attempt to make the ceremony more fun and meaningful) and started working towards becoming a better triathlete again. IT’S TIME TO BECOME AN IRONMAN!!
I have always been amazed by people who do IRONMANs. But there is one thing I have never really understood. Why do people do one in their backyard? For me, it’s not only about doing a challenge, but also experiencing something on the way, and I won’t get my money’s worth if I do the race where I usually live. Triathlons are way too expensive as they are, and especially IRONMANs. If I decide to spend that much money on something then I want to do it somewhere spectacular.
IRONMAN France, Nice is mostly known for having a hilly and striking bike course and it’s why that particular race has drawn me in. It’s by no means a place I’m going to get a time below ten hours and it is significantly harder because of the warm weather than my closest IRONMAN in Copenhagen. This doesn’t mean that I won’t try to do the race as fast as possible, but rather that during my struggles I will at least have the option to look out on a hilly mountain landscape and let my mind wander away from the pain. To me, the journey is just as much about exploring as the experience of overcoming an incredible obstacle.
You see, exploring is the key here. During my time training up towards this race I’ll be able to see all the different types of scenery Denmark has to offer. If I’m racing with the same view it goes against everything I stand for. I value running, cycling and swimming because it challenges me, but more so because it takes me to new places.
Are you joining?
